What are flightsuits, anyway? |
Created by Avian Fashions, flightsuits are cleverly disguised, soft, stretchy, reusable pet bird diapers. They allow your feathered friends out of their cages both in and out of the house; worry-free from embarrassing accidents (poop) or dangerous fly-aways. The patented "poop-pouch" safely keeps droppings away from the bird and you. They are easy to put on and take off, great for travel, fully breathable, and are made of a variety of easy to clean fabrics. With the high quality craftmanship, flightsuits can be used over and over for years. When using liners with the flightsuits, you can extend the time they can be worn, as well as the time between washing. Wanda's Critters Etc. carries one of the largest inventory selections available. *Please note, these are the original, high quality, patented flightsuits manufactured by Avian Fashions, no knock-offs or imitations are or ever will be sold here, as purchasing such lower quality imitations may not insure for the highest safety and durability. |
Sizing |
Below you will find a comprehensive guidline for the sizing of all flightsuits & attire listed by type of bird. Please keep in mind that just like humans, birds come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, even if they're the same breed; Because of this, it's impossible to gaurantee that the size below is the right one for your avian friend. If you have any doubts about sizing, simply contact Wanda (wanda@wandascrittersetc.com) before you buy and she'll do her best to see to it that you find the perfect size to fit your bird. |

Putting on your flightsuit |
Though it's important to know your own bird and handle him/her in the way that's most comfortable, below is a cartoon of what has been found to be the quickest, easiest, and safest way to put the flightsuit on your bird. Many customers find it's easiest when you talk to your bird in a calm soothing voice while you are putting it on, to distract him/her and provide insurance that you are not trying to hurt him in any way. Always make sure to put it on while in a familiar environment for the bird, so that he/she is as relaxed and calm as possible. The first few times you put the flightsuit on, the bird will be confused and scared, but rest assured that once he sees the new found freedom that his flightsuit will bring, he will become much more comfortable with the process. Some customers even report their birds being excited and eager to have it put on, because they understand they have more freedom when wearing it. As always, if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask! |

Caring for your flightsuit |
Due to the nature of flightsuits, they are inevitably apt to get dirty. However, caring for the durable suits are easier than ever! Once a flightsuit gets soiled, simply hand wash with a mild, non-allergenic soap or detergeant (it is recommended to be free of all dye and fragrances, as many of these substances could be toxic to birds. There are a variety of "free & clear" types available at your local drugstore or market). Once the flightsuit is clean, hang dry and within a few hours (time depedent on size and fabric), your flightsuit will be dry and as good as new! Need a place to dry your clean flightsuits? A flightsuit hanger works perfectly! See Accessories for more information and buying options! For extended time between washings, flightsuit liners can be placed inside of the flightsuit in the designated "poop pouch". Once soiled, the disposable liner can be thrown away and a new liner can be put in it's place. Disposable liners can be purchased in a variety of sizes. See Accessories for details. |
Using disposable liners in your flightsuit |
The flightsuit liners are a wonderful way to extend the life of your flightsuits. It is a common misunderstanding in how the liners work, however. While most people assume that the liner is placed inside the patented "poop pouch", this is not the case. If the liner were placed inside the pouch, then the pound would get soiled. Rather, the poop pouch is designed for the liner to be placed over the pouch. The pouch then keeps the flightsuit bottom stretched away from your bird, so that the waste will fall onto the liner, but still be kept away from the bird's body. This maximizes comfort and minimizes the mess. Before putting your suit on your bird, the liner should look something like this: (Note: Pictured flightsuits are inside out for clarity) |

Introducing your bird to flightsuits |
Some birds adjust to change well, but many are timid. Therefore, it's important to be patient when introducing anything new, be it food, toys, or especially flightsuits. To a bird, the concept of a flightsuit may be intimidating at first. If you find your bird is scared or hesitant with the flightsuit, try some of these tips for conditioning: * For a minumum of 2-3 days, allow bird to see the flightsuit from a comfortable distance so that he/she becomes comfortable with the fabric and colors * Slowly and gradually move the flightsuit closer to the bird. For example, attach it to your shirt at playtime. * Pet or caress the bird with the flightsuit, allowing the bird the opportunity to examine and explore the flightsuit * When the bird seems ready to give the flightsuit a try, remove food for 2-3 hours before putting the flightsuit on. Immediately feed the bird when after putting the flightsuit on. This serves as positive reinforcement and also distracts him/her. * Use plenty of positive reinforcement when the bird is wearing the suit, including a lot of one-on-one time, frequenty handling, and playing with his/her favorite toys. The more the bird associates the flightsuit with the freedom and fun that comes when they wear it, the more eager they will be to put it on! |
